Coming from DC, about a mile or so before reaching the quite enjoyable Nectar Lounge in Silver Spring on Georgia Avenue, one passes Serengeti Lounge on the same side of the street. Judging by the name, one might expect to find an African clientele dancing away to Naeto-C (one of the premier Afrobeats musicians with a DC connection), D’banj, etc.
However, Reggaeton was blasting away and the crowd (there were not too many bodies present) was exclusively Latino. A mural inside continued the safari theme, so I suspect the story behind this is that the spot likely catered to African tastes under a previous management and the new owners have not been big on renovations.
This stretch of Georgia Avenue has quite a few failed African establishments. The east African restaurant Masai Mara looks to have had a very short shelf life and I have always regretted that I never made it to Kendejah Lounge, a Liberian eatery. The Senegalese spot Chez Aunty Libe has been going strong for awhile, but it never seems to have much of a crowd.
