I haven’t blogged much about the recent tragedy at the Westgate mall – I do not mean to be politically incorrect, but the amount of attention the incident has received in the western media does seem disproportionate to me. Perhaps it is because many in the West, myself included, have been to the Westgate Mall and not to places like the Yobe State College of Agriculture in Nigeria.
Nonetheless, please note that a group of area Kenyans are having a (somewhat expensive) fundraising happy hour for the Kenya Red Cross Thursday evening near Dupont Circle. Eighteenth Street Lounge is the same venue as many of the YAP events.
Mambo?
Thank you so much for posting about this. I am unable to attend but really wish I could. I would like to ask you if you are aware of any events focused on Kenya and/or Tanzania specifically. I am the Language Liaison for a beginner’s Swahili class in DC, and I am in need of finding local events to supplement the language learning experience. If you could refer me to any lectures, programs, entertainment venues, or cultural exchanges surrounding the Swahili language, I would greatly appreciate it. I have googled and asked around, but as usual, African events tend to be grouped together. While I appreciate the many various cultures within the continent, in this instance the goal is to focus on only those that use the Swahili language, due to the nature of the class.
Thank you for existing, and best of luck with everything!!!
