After shelling out close to $50 this weekend to see P-Square, I wasn’t particularly enthused to also spend that amount to attend the African Oscars today (and I know little of Nollywood).  There were also several movies being shown in association with the award yesterday, I might have gone to one, but I was thinking that P-Square would start early enough to conflict with those screenings.

However, I did hear of a Nollywood Summit Continue reading →

I had previously voiced some skepticism over a possible DC stop for the Nigerian superstar duo P-Square during their North American tour.  It looks like they are now officially confirmed for a performance this Friday at Love the Club in NE, which I have never visited, although I understand it is quite upscale (which perhaps explains the $40 price tag for the show).

You can buy tickets here and watch the promo video here.

Also going down this weekend are the African Oscars (in this instance, ‘African’ is synonymous with ‘Nigerian’) with a $250 VIP admission fee.  All in all, things are shaping up in a way that would make the trendy champagne swilling elite on Lagos’ Victoria’s Island feel right at home here in DC.

In other news, I’m back from my short trip to west Africa.  I’ll try to write up a short travelogue before the weekend has passed.  However, between a busy week, catching up with work, and drama at work, I may need to beg your indulgence on that deadline.  In the meantime, jam out to this P-Square tune that I hear several times an hour while in Liberia (the ‘Personally’ video appears to be paying homage to Michael Jackson).

I first wrote about a massive weekend of African film in the DMV about two weeks ago.  Although the NAFCA ‘African Oscars’ remains the main event on September 14, it looks like several slightly more affordable screenings/DC premiers will take that Friday evening (the 13th).

You can now by your tickets for a few of these shows in the $20-30 price range now via Eventbrite:

Gem of the Rainforest (DMV Premiere)

One Night in Vegas (World Premiere)

Any suggestions as to which I should go see?

You can also still get tickets to  The Last Song Before the War, which chronicles the last Festival in the Desert to be held in Mali before the anti-song, anti-fun bad guys took over.  The film screens tonight.  I’ll be there as will the Ambassador of Mali, Al-Maamoun Keita, and several Malian musical performers.
