After Timaya and Sarkodie and P-Square, I’m burned out on performances at night clubs (none of the performances have been particularly great).  However, the Togolese duo Toofan seems to have set up shop in DC (as they were recent celebrity guests at Nectar Lounge in Silver Spring).  For those with more energy in the tank than I, they’ve got a performance being promoted this Friday (November 8) at Lux Lounge.

It’s past 4 am and I’m just back from the Timaya show.  First off, an apology if anyone bought a ticket at the link I posted to.  I did and it was not honored.  I don’t know if that’s because the promoter was trying to cheat me or not, but I eventually got in through the good graces of a female promoter. The protestations of the guy were ridiculous, because I was there early enough that they were still letting people in for free off the guest list.  Now on to my thoughts on the show.

Nigeria has just celebrated 53 years of independence and one of its biggest superstars, Timaya, will be in town for a show on Friday (I’ll be there) at Lux Lounge.  For those (and this will mostly be the ladies) who want to meet Timaya in a more intimate venue, you’ll have that opportunity tonight.

Here’s one of his hits, to get you shaking your bum bum and going down low.

Upcoming Afrobeats Shows in the DMV: Whither P – Square?

As we transition to the fall, it had been shaping up to be quite a busy season of Nigerian superstars performing in the DMV.  Yesterday, Signature Style Entertainment, a major DMV promoter of prominent Nigerian musicians who tour in the DMV (see their past events here) posted an Eventbrite link to purchase tickets for a P-Square show on September 13th at a venue tbd (even staid elderly Africanist consultants who rarely leave the international hotel chain in Accra where they spend most of their time should know the duo from songs like ‘Chop my Money‘).

However, the link is already down and the promotional poster for the tour lists no east coast performances.  In fact, the poster shows that they are slated to perform in Dallas on the 14th (although it also has them going from Chicago to Houston in a day).

In any event, if P-Square doesn’t make it out this way, emerging star Timaya is slated to get us to shake our ‘Bum Bum‘ in early October – Miley Cyrus only wishes she could twerk like those video vixens.  Tickets are on sale now, but I think I may wait a bit before buying.
