A major Africa in DC event, and one that my blog writing failed to help me garner an invitation to, is Africare’s annual Bishop Walker fundraising dinner. The April 20, 2013 event honored Barack Obama, who gave some of his Nobel Peace Prize funds to Africare (a NGO founded by black America in 1970) and the wealthy Sudanes entrepreneur, Mo Ibrahim, who has made it his personal mission to promote African good governance.
The Africare website describes the Dinner as “the nation’s largest annual fund raising event for Africa.” Mo Ibrahim did not fail to stir the pot, criticizing his fellow co-honoree, Obama, for his lack of engagement in Africa. It will be exciting times for Africa in DC when Obama makes his next state trip to sub-Saharan Africa, which is expected to be this year.
