I briefly popped into the basement level Recess Lounge today for the I Heart Africa event that I had heard of via Twitter. I had just gorged myself on a brunch buffet at the Bombay Club and was feeling extremely lethargic.
I briefly sat next to La Beautiful Mess, the convener of the event and Jackson Mvunganyi, co-host of Up Front Africa on the VOA. I did not place it at the time, but I’m confident that he also emceed that show a few years ago when I was a Peace Corps volunteer (although to be honest, I was much more devoted to the BBC).
The event had a fairly small crowd, despite the free hors d’oeuvre from an Ethiopian chef whose connection to the event I could not quite discern. A DJ spinned major Nigerian Afrobeats tunes.
